Bicentennial Time Capsule
From articles and meeting minutes in the WMU Archives:
- The Bicentennial Time Capsule was paid for by Landscape Services and
built by faculty and staff in the College of Applied Sciences (now called

box 2' x 2 x 2''. The contents were treated with dry preservative chemicals
and the capsule was sealed with a nitrogen atmosphere.
- The capsule was put in the ground beneath a poured concrete bench.
The bench was designed and approved by the Bicentennial committee, composed
of President Bernhard, Robert Luscombe, John Houdek, Janet Stilwell, and
Bill Kowalski. Plans were drawn by O'Boyle Landscape Architects. The committee
directed that the cost was not to exceed $810. 00 !!!!!
- The Time Capsule committee included Carl Doubleday, Janet Stilwell,
Mark Spink, and Carol Zytkewick. The capsule was sealed and inserted on
May 27, 1977. It is to be opened on 2077.
- The Time Capsule was relocated - unopened - to a new location in
the Dalton Promenade during Brown Hall and Arts Plaza renovation in 2007.
