At the September 17, 2004 Board
Meeting the Western Michigan University Board
of Trustees gave the University administration
the green light on construction of a new $28.5
million chemistry building.
The Chemistry Building is located between
Wood Hall and the University Computer Center.
It connects to Wood Hall via an overhead
pedestrian bridge that links the second floor
of each building. The east-side entrance
to the Chemistry Building faces the Charles
and Mary Stewart Tower of Waldo Library,
while the west-side entrance overlooks a
landscaped stormwater-retention basin.
The entire west facade is part of the major
pedestrian corridor that follows the campus'
north-south axis. The building is lined with
a spacious sidewalk, enhanced with seating
and landscaping, that connects with the Dalton
Promenade at the south end of the building.
The Promenade, renovated as part of the Chemistry
Building project, continues down the slope
to the plaza in front of Miller Auditorium.
The classroom facility includes three auditoriums,
usable for both for chemistry and general
education instruction, chemistry teaching
labs, and spaces dedicated for use by student
groups. All building services and utilities
are delivered to the building through an
underground tunnel that connects with the
Dalton Center loading dock in order to preserve
green space in the central of campus.
The instructional lab spaces to
be housed in the new building are:
- general chemistry
- physical chemistry
- quantitative analysis
- advanced inorganic / capstone
- organic chemistry
- physical chemistry / computation modeling
- instrumental methods
- chemistry for health professionals
- introduction and advanced biochemistry
- biochemistry instrument
- biochemistry tissue preparation, and
- organic chemistry instrument.
